I started compiling a list of my own favorite grooves after I saw MD asking famous drummers what were their's. It grew well beyond a dozen names but I figured why not whittle it down and see who I'd stolen from the most. I know there've been top ten lists before in HOD and top fives and who's your favorite but I'm bored.

    Ta-da!

John BONHAM: Good Times Bad Times, How Many More Times, Lemon Song, Out On The Tiles, Four Sticks, No Quarter, The Ocean, In My Time of Dying, Nobody?s Fault But Mine, Fool In The Rain, Poor Tom, Hey Hey What Can I Do {Led Zeppelin} . . . hey hey what can I say, these are the ones that spring instantly to mind, one (or two) from each album

Terry BOZZIO: Titties and Beer {Frank Zappa}, No Way Out, Walking In LA, Give {Missing Persons} . . . after MP Terry?s career went downhill despite high profile gigs with Jeff Beck and The Knack , he?s an innovator but has gone off in such a bizarre direction it isn?t easy get into his style nowadays

Vinnie COLAIUTA: Low Speed Chase, Canarsie Daiquiri {Warren Cuccurullo}, Aliens (Ripped My Face Off), I?m Tweaked {Karizma}, The Hong Kong Incident, Crazy Town {Jing Chi} . . . a great gifted player from the Tony Williams school

Stewart COPELAND: Walking On The Moon, No Time This Time {Police} . . . this cat was absolutely a bona fide innovator and played genuinely exciting drums with tons of attitude

Steve GADD: 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover {Paul Simon}, Nite Sprite {Chick Corea}, Memorial Day (Carly Simon} . . . we didn?t use to call him Steve God for nothing

Elvin JONES: My Favorite Things, The Inch Worm (live), Vigil, Attaining, Sun Ship {John Coltrane} . . . Elvin with Trane was as breath-taking as Mitch with Jimi or Bonzo with Page

Ian PAICE: Speed King, Fireball, Maybe I?m A Leo, Space Truckin?, Lay Down Stay Down {Deep Purple}, She Said Yeah, Party {Paul McCartney} . . . the master of the excess is best route, the more notes he played the better I liked it

Stephen PERKINS: Been Caught Stealin?, Stop (Jane?s Addiction), Packin? .25, Porno For Pyros (Porno For Pyros) . . . as equally original as Stewart Copeland but with darker voicings and more complex rhythms

Simon PHILLIPS: You Never Know, Space Boogie {Jeff Beck}, Party In Simon?s Pants {Steve Lukather} . . . there is nothing this guy can?t play, a true musician of the drum kit

Bernard PURDIE: Respect {Aretha Franklin}, Home At Last, Babylon Sisters {Steely Dan} . . . the man who showed me how to play a shuffle and nobody shuffles like the Pharaoh of Funk

Dave WECKL: Humpty Dumpty {Chick Corea}, Dis?Place This, Festival de Ritmo {Dave Weckll} . . . a great technician from the Steve Gadd school

Tony WILLIAMS: Mademoiselle Mabry {Miles Davis}, Via The Spectrum Road, Vuelta Abajo {The TW Lifetime}, The Slump {TW Quintet}. . . a brilliant jazzman, the hippest of the hip

I know Lang, Minnemann, Donati, Porcaro, et al, aren't on here, but it doesn't mean I don't like them, this is just TODAY'S list.
